US tightens Pakistan and China over religious freedom, India's big diplomatic victory.

Along with the restrictions imposed on Beijing officials over Hong Kong autonomy, the US has also encircled China and its friend Pakistan in terms of religious freedom. The United States has expressed serious concern over the encroachment of religious freedom into Pakistan and China.

However, there are 8 other countries in this list, apart from China and Pakistan, where the violation of religious freedom has been questioned. The US State Department has placed these countries on a special watch list in violation of religious freedom.

China and Pakistan figure prominently in the list of countries that have failed to stop the oppression and discrimination that has taken place over particular religious groups in their country. The special thing is that India is constantly questioning the excesses and atrocities on Hindus in Pakistan. In this sense, this is a major diplomatic victory for India. This move of the US has proved India's right that Hindus are constantly oppressed and exploited in Pakistan.

An official statement from the US State Department says that it includes China, Pakistan, Burma, Iran, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Eritrea. Five Asian countries are included in this list. The Secretary of State further stated that Cuba, Nicaragua, Comoros and Russia have also been placed on a special watch list. These countries are also accused of serious violations of religious freedom.

India vs Australia 2020-21: Yuzvendra Chahal on verge of achieving this unique record in T20.

Indian Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will be within the striking distance of a unique record when he takes field against Australia in the third T20 International cricket in Sydney on Sunday. The 30-year-old will surpass Jasprit Bumrah to become the leading wicket taker for India in the shortest format of the game if he strikes twice in the third match.

Chahal currently has 58 T20I wickets to his name, just one less than Bumrah. The latter is unlikely to be part of India's playing XI tomorrow and so Chahal can surpass him to top the list with two       wickets. With three wickets for just 25 runs, Chahal was instrumental in India's 11-run win over Australia in the first T20. Notably, he took the field as a concussion replacement of Ravindra Jadeja after the latter was hit on the helmet in the final over of India's innings. Chahal's inclusion in the playing XI had prompted the discussion whether the concussion protocols were rightly followed after Jadeja's injury.

World Malaria Report, 2020

The World Malaria Report, 2020 was recently released by the World Health Organisation. As per the report, India recorded the largest reduction in malaria cases in South East Asia. The case count has reduced from 20 million in 2000 to around 5.6 million in 2019. The report also stated that the global malaria case count has remained unchanged for the past four years. In 2019, the number was around 229 million. According to the world Malaria report, 2020 prepared by the World Health Organisation, India was one among the 11 highest Malaria burden countries in the world.

Key findings of the report
.
  • India is the largest contributor of Malaria cases in the south-east Asia region. Around 88% of Malaria cases in the region are from India.
  • India has reduced the Malaria cases by 21% between 2018 and 2019.
  • India has also reduced the malarial deaths in the past two years. In 2019, the number of deaths due to malaria in India was 409,000. It was 411,000 in 2018. This has made India one of the largest contributors to drop in malaria cases in the south-east Asia region.
  • According to the report the highest Malaria burden countries were Cameron, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Mali, Ghana, India, Nigeria and United Republic of Tanzania. These countries accounted to 70% of global estimated Malaria burden. Most of these countries were from Africa.
  • African region accounted to more than 90% of overall malarial disease burden. However, since 2000 the number of Malaria deaths in the continent has reduced by 44%.
  • The progress against malaria has not increased according to the WHO report. This is mainly due to the gaps in access to life saving tools and covid-19 pandemic. This is also due to shortfall in funding at both National and international levels. The malarial funding in 2019 reached 3 billion USD as against the target of 5.6 billion USD.
  • World Malaria Day: It is celebrated on April 25.
